Alumni Spotlight: Mayor Jorge Morales

City of South Gate

(LLA '15)

In what ways have you used some of the tools and skills developed through Leadership Los Angeles, and how did the up-close examination and exposure to community issues directly impact your work?

“Going into the Leadership L.A. program, I was confident that I would grow professionally, but I could have never imagined the impact that it would have on my personal life.  At our first meeting we learned about mindfulness – or being present in the moment.  This lesson has by far been the most useful skill I’ve picked up during my personal and professional development journey. Even though it sounded counterintuitive, minimizing the use of “multi-tasking” has had an incredibly positive impact on my life – both at work and at home.

My first son was born around the time I started Leadership LA and I remember trying to carry him and feed him with one-arm so that I could use the other arm to respond to emails.  While that may sound silly to me today, I honestly believed then that I was being efficient with my time.  But, I wasn’t giving my son the attention he deserved, I wasn’t enjoying watching my first born develop before my eyes, and I wasn’t being effective for my duties at work and as mayor.

Today, because of Leadership L.A. I have learned to be present – to be in the moment at home and at work; I’ve defined my mission statement; learned about my blind spots and have made some great friendships.

I am grateful to have been part of this program and on behalf of my family, I thank the staff that works tirelessly to make this a worthwhile investment in ourselves.  Thank you and God Bless!”
